This cold December day started off just like every other for skilled trades worker Curtis Cody.

Curtis is a painter for University Housing. He clocked in and evaluated the day’s tasks. After finishing up his last sip of coffee, he headed out to finish the first job.

Curtis Cody

Curtis is accustomed to this routine, but has also come to realize that working at the university can bring the unexpected at the blink of an eye.

Which is exactly what happened shortly after lunch Dec. 13.

A west-bound car on W. Center Street driven by student during finals week crashed into Delta Sigma Theta sorority house on the corner of Duncan Avenue and Center Street. It appeared that the exhausted student dosed off at the wheel and guided the car directly into the front porch, slamming into the basement wall.

Without hesitation, Curtis sprung from his vehicle and headed directly towards the pinned car and immediately freed the half-conscious student through the backseat door. He guided her to safety in a nearby parking lot.

He then to checked on the students who were inside the house at the time of the accident and stayed on the scene until emergency crews were able to take over.

Cody was later heard saying “all in a day’s work” after the scene was under control.
